SPR Welcomes New President

Los Angeles, February 23, 2007 – Stop Prisoner Rape (SPR), a national human rights organization dedicated to ending sexual violence behind bars, is pleased to announce the election of David Kaiser as President of its Board of Directors.

David Kaiser is a writer living in New York. A graduate of Columbia University, he was on the editorial staff of the New York Review of Books from 1998 to 2001 and recently completed work on a novel. Kaiser has extensive experience serving on the boards of nonprofit organizations and foundations, including Winrock International. He joined the Board of Directors of SPR in 2004 and previously served as Secretary.

“I am honored to be part of SPR’s unique effort to end prisoner rape,” Kaiser said. “Thanks in large part to the courage of survivors of rape in detention, including my predecessor T.J. Parsell, SPR has brought unprecedented attention to this nation’s most widespread and neglected human rights crisis.”

Another human rights advocate, Mary Garton, has also joined SPR’s Board of Directors. Garton is the Executive Director of Teach For America in New Orleans, a national corps of outstanding college graduates who commit to teaching for two years in an effort to end educational inequity. Garton has spent most of her career bringing high-quality education to underserved communities.
